Redsnow is a freeware that is easy to use including, multi-platform, multi-device jail breaking and unlocking tool for the original iPhone 2G and the iPhone 3GS and also for the first and second generation iPod touch. It is available for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows only apps.
In order to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use ‘PwnageTool’ on Mac OS X.
- UltraSn0w has been released via APT in both Cydia and Icy installer that can be used to unlock your iPhone.
- Yellowsnow has been replaced with Ultrasn0w which has been released via APT which also means that you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy as mentioned earlier.
- This app is suitable for the 3.0 release
- Redsnow will work for all the original type iPhones including, Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS.
Note: To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run Redsnow to activate and jailbreak the device and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too.
I would recommend that you simply follow the step by step guide below to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS with redsn0w. You will need to first update or restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.0 on your iPhone 3GS by using iTunes 8.2 before proceeding with the following steps:
- Browse to the Original iPhone firmware OS 3.0 ipsw file for iPhone 3GS and check the links below to download them.
- Redsnow will then verify to see if the .ipsw is valid and will automatically patch the original file.
- You only need to check on “Install Cydia” to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS. There is no need to check the options for “Icy” and “Unlock”.
- Now ensure that your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer before you click on ”Next”.
- At this stage you will have to quickly hold “Power” button and then while holding the “Power” button, you will now have to hold “Home” button too. Thereafter, in a few seconds release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until installation begins.
- Finally, relax while Redsnow will do all the rest for you. Once done, your iPhone will restart automatically and you will find it jail broken.
